Thermal printhead care: the 10-minute maintenance routine
Printheads do not die of old age, they die of neglect. Ten minutes of care per ribbon change routinely doubles printhead life, and printheads are the most expensive consumable in the fleet.
The 10-minute routine
- Power off and open the mechanism.
- Wipe the print line with an isopropyl cleaning pen or wipe, one direction only.
- Clean the platen roller: rotate and wipe until the swab comes away clean.
- Dust the media path and sensors.
- Let everything dry before closing.
Do it every ribbon change
Tie the routine to ribbon changes and it never gets forgotten. Wax-resin and resin ribbons run hotter, so heads on those lines need the routine most.
The signs you waited too long
Thin white lines through the print mean dead elements: that head is done. Faint print that cleaning fixes means you caught it in time.
We stock cleaning pens, wipes and film, and our Auckland workshop replaces printheads for most major brands: book a service.
