Thermal printer troubleshooting: the 5-minute checklist
When a thermal printer misbehaves mid-shift, most fixes take five minutes. Work down this list before you book a service call.
Faint or patchy print
Clean the printhead, check the ribbon matches the stock, then raise darkness one step at a time. Persistent faint lines mean worn elements: workshop time.
Labels skipping or drifting
Recalibrate the media sensor (most printers: hold feed until the lights cycle). Check the stock is seated against the guides.
Ribbon wrinkling
Reseat the ribbon path and check tension. Wrinkle prints as diagonal white streaks.
Nothing prints at all
Direct thermal stock in a transfer printer (or vice versa) is the classic. Check what the job expects.
When to stop fiddling
Grinding noises, repeated head faults, or damage you can see: stop and book the workshop. Auckland bench service for all major brands, loaners available for critical sites.
