Wax vs wax-resin vs resin ribbons: a plain-English guide
The ribbon decides whether your label is readable in a year or smudged by Friday. There are three families, and picking between them takes one minute once you know the rule.
Wax: the economical default
Wax ribbons suit paper labels in dry, indoor use: carton labels, shelf labels, general logistics. Lowest cost, good print quality, moderate durability.
Wax-resin: the handling survivor
Mixes resin toughness into the wax. Survives scuffing, moisture and handling, which makes it the pick for cartons that ride conveyors and pallets that get restacked.
Resin: the extreme-conditions option
Pure resin bonds to synthetic labels and shrugs off chemicals, freezers, steam and outdoor exposure. Medical, marine, horticulture and industrial asset labelling live here.
The rule
Match the ribbon to the label stock and the journey: paper + dry = wax; paper + handling = wax-resin; synthetic or harsh = resin. Send us your printer model and label stock and we will confirm the grade in one call.
