Thermal direct vs thermal transfer: which should you use?
Every thermal label job starts with one decision: direct thermal or thermal transfer. Get it wrong and labels fade in transit or you pay for ribbon you never needed. Here is the plain-English version our Auckland team gives customers on the phone.
Thermal direct: no ribbon, shorter life
Direct thermal stock darkens when the printhead heats it. No ribbon, fewer moving parts, lower cost per label. The trade-off: the image fades over months, faster with heat and sunlight. Perfect for courier labels, shipping manifests and anything read within weeks.
Thermal transfer: ribbon in, years of life
Thermal transfer melts ink from a ribbon into the label surface. The print survives handling, moisture and time, which is why product labels, asset tags and compliance labels are almost always thermal transfer.
The 10-second decision
- Read within 6 months, indoors? Direct thermal.
- Needs to last, face weather, or carry a barcode a DC will scan next year? Thermal transfer.
- Cold store or chemical exposure? Thermal transfer on synthetic stock with a resin ribbon.
